BAEER Fair!

Thank you for joining us for the BAEER Fair 2012! It was a great chance to share LEAF with the larger community, and learn about other environmental organizations.

Steep Ravine Canyon on July 20th

On Wednesday July, 20th we went to the Steep Ravine Canyon and we hiked on a narrow path that went by the stream we later tested the water in. When we got to the place were we would test the water we climbed down a steep hill. We all went to different stations were we tested the pH, Oxygen and the Temperature. After we had gone through all but one station we climbed back up the hill and continued to finish the hike. When we finished the hike we climbed into the cars and went to the beach. We ate our lunch and walked down to the beach. Everyone got soaked but it was still really fun.

Glide's Rooftop Garden

We did our morning game and worked on our blog and iMovies. After getting off of the bus, we walked the rest of the way to the Glide Rooftop Garden. The first thing we did was split off into two groups. The first group measured the perimeters of the staircase and elevator shaft. Then we measured the area of the roof and we measured the gallons of water that would come off of the roof in a year as well as the volume. The second group did the gardening like watering all of the plants the plants and coating their soil with compost. Others measured the back wall.

After about an hour we stopped to go see the bees. We all stood around the hive as two bee keepers opened the hive and smoked the bees to make the sleepy and then showed us the inside. The bees were really gentle and they did not sting anyone. I got really close and could smell the warm fresh honey.

When the hive was put back together we went back to gardening for a couple minutes then we finished what ever we were doing (in my case sifting compost ) and circled up to say thank you and goodbye.

Glide's Graze the Roof! Day 4

Today we went to Graze the Roof. It's actually a rooftop garden!

We saw a beehive and a bee landed on me. It was a nice bee because it didn't sting me. Nicole (one of my friends) and I made sun tea (mine tasted better) and it was really fun. We also sifted through the compost and made fertilizer to put on the tomatoes. We did math too (even in the summer). We measured a house to see how many barrels we would need to catch all the rain water and the grand total was 2020.4415 buckets!!!!! Then, we took the transit home. Overall, it was a very fun (and hot) day.

SFPUC Waste Water Treatment Plant Day 2

On the 2nd day of LEAF, in the morning we went to SFPUC. Which is the sewer, we got a tour of it underground. First we had to put on these head wraps then we put on hard hats with gloves.The first place we walked in smelled really bad. we walked into many rooms, and in one of the rooms their was like these pools of a brown liquid then when we walked down towards the end and it turned out to be poop. Then when we finished the tour we went on like a scavenger hunt in teams and at the end we ended up at the beach and we got to play for a while and get wet. Then when we finished, behind us we went to this water reservoir and got a tour in their and tasted some water they had and it tasted really good. We say were all the water was under ground, it was REALLY COOL!!!
